Bill Newman

LICENSED REAL ESTATE BROKER, NC LICENSED GENERAL CONTRACTOR

“I have been building homes and additions in the Chapel Hill area for over thirty years. I was building “green” before I knew what color to call it. I built architect designed homes featuring passive solar features such as trombe walls, solar slabs, and solariums as early as the mid-1980′s. Several homes also had active solar hot water systems as soon as the technology was available.

“I have always been interested in energy-efficient features that prove to be cost-effective, always operating within the dynamic tension between smart design and fine aesthetics and affordability. I enjoy using natural materials such as native stone, stucco, and wood, but I am always attempting to remain informed about manufactured products and new systems that make sense, such as fiber-cement products and metal roofing systems. Energy efficient products and systems that I have employed on various homes include:

  • passive and active solar components
  • solar hot water collectors and on-demand hotwater heaters
  • high efficiency woodstoves with catalytic converters
  • sealed crawlspaces
  • icynene foam insulation
  • fiberglass-clad windows with low emissivity glass
  • radiant slabs
  • foil radiant barriers and insulation

“Customers frequently comment on how pleased they are with their low energy bills. I often incorporate features that are beautiful, yet economical such as dyed, scored, and polished concrete floors as well as concrete countertops that I have fabricated myself in the tradition of the pioneering architect and builder, Tu Fung Cheng. I have always prided myself on fashioning beautiful structures for living at the best possible cost. I am never rigid in my approach to a project, preferring to remain fluid and open to ideas, and ,therefore, a project often evolves like a living thing so that new ideas and features can be incorporated as the construction progresses. Such an approach requires a sensitivity to design as well as to the desires and the lifestyles of the client.”
